The Northern Star Pogo site is located southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska and is one of the ore reserves owned by Northern Star Resources Limited – a global-scale gold producer. As an ongoing graphic design vendor for this company, I was asked to create a belt buckle design that encompasses the iconic machinery and equipment familiar with the site. Two other versions of the belt buckle design were also requested, a coloured and line-only version. Throughout the design process I corresponded with the processing manager who supplied various reference images to choose from. These included the SAG mill (wheel-like structure), furnace, operators in silver PPE, and truck. I mocked up a rough composition for review based on the images supplied before proceeding to create the coloured vector format of the design, followed by the line version, and lastly the belt buckle version. It made sense to start on the most complicated version and work backwards by simplifying elements for the others. Each of the colour and line designs had monochromatic versions created to reflect Northern Star’s several brand colours. When it came to the belt buckle version, I had to consider how this design would be moulded into a 3D space so in order to communicate this to the manufacturer, I created a version where the lightest parts of this design represent the most embossed parts of the logo while the darkest parts represent the most debossed.
